By providing knowledge and understanding of three things to the younger generation, democracy education seeks to empower citizens to think critically and act democratically. These three things are: First, democracy is a social structure that best protects the rights of citizens. Second, democracy is a process that must be learned and cannot simply be imitated by other nations. Third, the effectiveness of changing democratic principles such as freedom, equality and justice as well as obedience to the democratic political system is very important for the survival of democracy. The goals of democratic education as mentioned above are in line with the goals of national education as stated in Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning The National Education System (Sisdiknas) in article 3 namely developing capabilities and forming dignified national character and civilization in the context of educating the life of the nation, aims to develop the potential of students to become human beings who believe and fear God Almighty, have noble character, are healthy, knowledgeable, and most importantly democratic.
